Earth Month 2012: Waste Audit - State Hygienic Lab

April 20, 2012 - 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. - State Hygienic Lab, UI Research Park, 2490 Crosspark Road, Coralville, Iowa

The State Hygienic Lab (SHL) at the University of Iowa  is planning a waste audit as part of Earth Month, from 9 -11 a.m. April 20 in the east garage space at the new facility in the UI Research Park off of Oakdale Boulevard.

Waste sorts, or audits, measure how much refuse is actually recyclable or compostable. SHL staff are conducting the waste sort to determine the composition of the building's waste in order to create strategies for reducing or diverting waste and improving recycling.

Volunteers from the ECO HAWK and Engineers for a Sustainable World will help with the waste sort, but additional volunteers are needed.  Protective gear and safety instructions will be provided. Sign up for a shift on via ECO HAWK's webpage. For more infomation,  contact the Office of Sustainability sustainability@uiowa.edu or contact George McCrory at 319-335-5517.

The UI has conducted several waste audits at various campus buildings, with the last at Burge Residence Hall. See this summary for details, photos and video.
