Gameday recycling

This fall, Kinnick Stadium is getting a little greener thanks to a new game day recycling effort spearheaded by the Iowa Recycling Team. You can join the team and staff recycling stations at remaining home Iowa Hawkeye Football games to educate and assist fans with sorting their recyclable materials.

Recycling stations will be set up outside the gates outside Kinnick Stadium and volunteers will staff the stations in shifts starting two hours before kickoff for the remaining games Oct. 20, Nov. 10 and Nov. 23. See the Hawkeye football schedule for home game start times. Before to starting your shift, there will be a short information session outlining what can and cannot be recycled. University of Iowa Athletics, Facilities Management, the Office of Sustainability, Waste Management, ARAMARK, the Delta Tau Delta fraternity, and the ECO Hawk student organization are all part of the Iowa Recycling Team, which is aiming to divert 60 percent of the waste at Kinnick from the landfill through recycling and composting programs. For the first four games, 48 percent of the waste at Kinnick was diverted from the landfill. The Iowa Recycling Team's high score for a game was 57 percent diversion at the Iowa vs. Northern Iowa game Sept. 15, followed by 53 percent at the Iowa vs Minnesota game Sept. 29.

ARAMARK and Iowa Memorial Union Catering are gathering food and kitchen waste in the concession stands and Press Box areas for composting. During the post-game cleanup on Sundays, the recycling team helps students to sort recyclable materials from the stadium. Waste Management then hauls the materials to a City Carton recycling facility.

Fans can do their part by recycling plastic bottles, cans, plastic souvenir cups, paper cups, coffee cup holders and lids, popcorn buckets, cardboard and paper. Items not accepted include bags, glass, food or food-covered containers.
