Greenhouse pull at UIEC student garden, Oct 10
October 06, 2010
Volunteers are needed to help pull the greenhouse located at the University of Iowa Environmental Coalition (UIEC) student garden at 5 p.m., on Sunday, Oct. 10, 2010. The greenhouse pull will take twenty people, ten on each rope, and will take about 30 minutes from start to finish. The student garden is located near the UI recreation fields, just off Mormon Trek Blvd.
“This will be a superb day for people passionate about sustainability to get involved and move the greenhouse -- and ideals -- in a new direction,” said Giselle Bruskewitz, UIEC secretary.
UIEC members and volunteers who want to will ride bicycles to the garden for the pull should meet at the Old Capitol on the Pentacrest at 4:30 p.m.
“There’s still plenty to accomplish at the garden outside the traditional growing season, so we’re definitely looking for new people to join the UIEC.”
Bruskewitz said volunteers are needed to harvesting greens and arugula, plant garlic and greens inside the greenhouse, as well as get the garden prepped for winter. The group continues work through the winter months developing a garden manual, making academic connections with the Student Living-Learning Community as well as pursuing opportunities to work with Certificate in Sustainability courses. And then Bruskewitz said the gardening season begins again in February when the group starts seedlings for next year’s crop.
University of Iowa students interested in the greenhouse pull or volunteering for other UIEC garden activities are encouraged contact Bruskewitz by email, firstname.lastname@example.org or RSVP on the greenhouse pull Google spreadsheet, https://spreadsheets0.google.com/ccc?key=to8SVvnD16XPrxnNrG-516w&authkey=CJavo58K&hl=en&authkey=CJavo58K#gid=0.
