HAWKEYE GARDEN

October 22, 2009 HAWKEYE STUDENT GARDEN GREENHOUSE PULL
Student Garden

Student volunteers of the Hawkeye Student Garden and UI Environmental Coalition moved the greenhouse to its winter location on the garden site during the week of October 12, 2009.

Students used a system of manual labor and pulleys to accomplish the move. The team leader was Adam Perkins, former BLS student worker and current Hawkeye Garden manager. The following YouTube video clips show the moving of the greenhouse and team huddle celebration after the move.

The new location will allow for late fall and winter crops to be planted and supplied to the Iowa Memorial Union Food Service.  The garden has been producing a variety of spring and summer produce that the students provided to the food service for inclusion in meals served to UI students, faculty and staff at the IMU.

This is the first year the UI Environmental Coalition maintained a commercial-size operation on the 1/3rd acre plot on the Hawkeye Campus. The greenhouse was installed in April 2009 and was planted with a variety of tomatoes. Compost from pre-consumer food waste was applied to the garden to prepare and fertilize the soil, creating a full circle of on-campus, locally grown produce using organic methods of gardening.  President Sally Mason helped to dedicate the garden and greenhouse during Earth Week on April 23, 2009 (photo above).   Since that time the garden has been maintained by a group of volunteer students who provide vegetables and produce to the IMU Food Services twice a week.  Produce in August included the following:  yellow squash, yellow onions, red onions, roma tomatoes, zuchinni, yukon potatoes, green beans and cucumbers.

The University of Iowa Environmental Coalition Student Demonstration Garden officially formed in the Spring Semester of 2009. Our mission is to educate students, faculty and staff about sustainable food systems. Outcomes include:
  • Create mentoring opportunities for people who want to learn practical skills.
  • Provide sustainably grown produce to Iowa Memorial Union Food Services.
  • Provide opportunity for sustainable food choices and lifestyle practices for students in the Sustainable Living-Learning Community.
  • Promote interdisciplinary cooperation between student organizations.
The Hawkeye Garden is the focal point of our project. This site provides an open canvas for the design and implementation of this community project. At just over 1/3rd of an acre there is plenty of room to practice a variety of sustainable methods of food production, and opportunity to grow a diversity of crops.

An Open House event was held on the 23rd of April at 1:30 in the afternoon and coincided with Earth Week atTthe University of Iowa. Student Gardeners were proud hosts of President Sally Mason, administrators, faculty, staff, and students.
