Compost in Residence Halls
How To Compost In Your Room
The Office of Sustainability and University Housing & Dining are excited to offer students an opportunity to compost more easily on campus. Students living in UI residence halls can now collect compost right in their own room. In order to participate in this program, students must follow the steps below. To ensure this program is successful, only students who are committed to the responsibilities that come with in-room compost collection are encouraged to participate. If not done properly, composting can become a nuisance to roommates and floormates, and could compromise the program for all other participants.
Determine which residence hall compost drop-off site is nearest you and decide if you are willing to take your compost bucket to the drop-off site at least once-per-week.
If you choose to proceed with composting, complete the Residence Hall Compost Enrollment Form.
Complete a Compost Program Roommate Agreement with your roommates and RA. This can be done during your regular roommate agreement meeting (typically sometime between weeks 3 and 6 of the fall semester) or if you have already conducted your regular roommate agreement, you can download the form and complete the agreement as instructed.
Pick up your compost starter kit from the Office of Sustainability at 1650 UCC (University Capitol Centre). We are located on the first floor, next to the Silver Spider store.
Place compostable materials in your bucket. To minimize odors and pests, consider keeping your bucket in the refrigerator.
Empty your bucket at least once-per-week at one of the residence hall compost drop-off sites. Wipe your bucket clean as needed to prevent odors and pests.
Pick up a new compostable bag for your compost bucket at the front desk of Burge, Catlett, or Hillcrest.
Repeat Steps 5 through 7.
Return your compost bin at the end of the school year, or upon your decision to terminate your participation in the program. Before returning your bin, empty all contents, wipe it clean. Return it to the compost collection table at your designated MicroChill collection event at the end of the school year (or bring it to the Office of Sustainability if you are terminating your participation mid-semester).
