Celebrating Biodiversity, Community Science, and Prairie Conservation
Since its inception, the University of Iowa’s Annual BioBlitz has grown into a beloved tradition. It brings together scientists, students, and nature enthusiasts to explore and document the rich biodiversity of Iowa’s prairie ecosystems. Now in its fifth year, the BioBlitz continues to inspire curiosity, foster environmental stewardship, and contribute valuable data to ecological research.
What is a BioBlitz?
A BioBlitz is a collaborative, fast-paced biological survey where participants work together to identify as many species as possible within a specific area and timeframe. It’s a unique blend of science, education, and community engagement—offering a hands-on opportunity to connect with nature while contributing to real-world conservation efforts.
Ashton Prairie Living Lab
The BioBlitz takes place at Ashton Prairie Living Laboratory (APLL) which is a vibrant outdoor classroom and research site located within the University’s Ashton Cross Country Course. Each summer, APLL welcomes scientists, students, and community members to explore and document the rich biodiversity of this restored prairie landscape during the BioBlitz.
Established in spring 2020 with the seeding of its first acre of native prairie, APLL has become a hub for hands-on learning, ecological research, and community engagement. It offers a living environment where University of Iowa students, faculty, and local residents can study the complexities of prairie ecosystems and witness the return of native biodiversity.
BioBlitz Results on iNaturalist
BioBlitz participants upload their findings to iNaturalist, a free, community-powered platform where people can record and share observations of plants, animals, and other organisms. It connects everyday nature enthusiasts with scientists and conservationists around the world, helping to build a global database of biodiversity.
These observations support ongoing research, conservation planning, and public education—while also contributing to a worldwide effort to understand and protect nature.
Collaborators
The success of the BioBlitz is made possible through collaboration with a wide range of campus and community partners, including:
University of Iowa Athletics | Office of Sustainability and the Environment | Department of Biology | Department of Chemistry | Hubbell Environmental Law Initiative | Macbride Nature Recreation Area | Landscape Services | School of Earth and Environmental Sustainability | The Pentacrest Museums | State Hygienic Laboratory | Bee Campus Committee | UI WILD
