Free Community Event Celebrates the Rich Biodiversity of Iowa's Prairies
Thursday, June 4, 2026

The University of Iowa invites community members of all ages to step into the prairie and experience the wonders of local biodiversity at the 6th Annual BioBlitz. This free, family-friendly event will take place on Saturday, July 11 at the Ashton Prairie Living Laboratory (APLL), offering a unique opportunity to explore, learn, and contribute to real scientific research.

A BioBlitz is a collaborative effort to record as many species as possible within a set time and place. During the event, participants will join University of Iowa scientists, students, and conservation partners in observing and documenting the diverse plants, insects, birds, and other wildlife that call Iowa’s prairie ecosystems home.

Guests can spend the day immersed in discovery while:

  • Exploring diverse prairie habitats firsthand

  • Learning how to identify species using the iNaturalist app

  • Engaging with interactive exhibits and educational displays

Whether you’re a seasoned naturalist or simply curious about the outdoors, the BioBlitz offers a fun way to engage with science and deepen your understanding of the local environment. All observations made during the event will support ongoing research and conservation efforts, helping build a clearer picture of ecological health in the region.

“Every year, we’re surprised by what we find.  Last year, someone found a prairie crayfish.  A couple of years before that, there was a great horned owl,” said event organizer, Brinda Shetty. “The BioBlitz turns the prairie into a real-life treasure hunt, where anyone can be the person who spots something new or unexpected.”

No prior experience is needed, and all materials will be provided. The event is free and open to the public.
