Every tree has a story, and the Iowa Tree Stories program wants to hear yours through the inaugural MVTree (Most Valuable Tree) Contest.  This contest aims to crown the trees that have earned legendary status through their beauty, history, size, or community impact.  What tree is the Caitlin Clark of the canopy, the Nile Kinnick of shade, or the hometown favorites that have quietly been delivering all-star performances for years.

Community members are encouraged to nominate a favorite tree in one of five categories:

  • Most Beloved Tree – A tree with special meaning, memories, or significance.
  • Most Striking Tree – A tree known for its beauty, size, color, or unique appearance.
  • Best Shade Provider – A tree that offers a welcome place to gather, study, or cool off.
  • Most Resilient Tree – A tree that has weathered storms, challenges, or changing conditions.
  • Hidden Gem – A lesser-known tree that deserves recognition.

"Everyone has a favorite tree and a story that explains why it matters to them," said Beth MacKenzie, program manager in the UI Office of Sustainability and the Environment. "The MVTree Contest is an opportunity to share those stories and celebrate the trees that have shaped our lives and communities."

Nominators are encouraged to share photos and describe what makes their tree special. Whether it's an oak that has shaded campus gatherings, a pine that survived a historic storm, or a serviceberry tucked away in a hidden oasis, every nomination helps tell Iowa's tree stories.
