Alternative Transportation Options

The University of Iowa is committed to fostering a sustainable, forward-thinking campus by promoting innovative transportation solutions that reduce environmental impact and enhance community well-being. From cycling infrastructure and electric mobility to accessible public transit and pedestrian-friendly design, there are many options to get around campus and the greater Iowa City area.

Biking

Biking is an environmentally friendly and healthy alternative to driving on campus. Whether it's commuting, competitive biking, or anything in between, Iowa is a great place to bike. The League of American Bicyclists has designated the University of Iowa as a Silver Bicycle Friendly University.

  • Follow the traffic laws
  • Share the road and walkways
  • Watch these videos from the League of American Bicyclists that show techniques for improving your ride, your rights as a bicyclist and how to ride safely on the road.

Bike Laws and Regulations

Preventing Theft

  • Tips for securing your bike
  • Report a stolen bike to the UI Police Department immediately or call the local police department within the community where the bike was stolen. Provide the bike registration number, serial number, make, model, size and color

Public Transportation

Hop on a bus to get to class, the grocery store, or anywhere in between.  The University’s CAMBUS and Iowa City Transit are fare-free systems serving campus and nearby areas.  Coralville Transit provide broader regional coverage with frequent connections to the university. All three systems are integrated with the Transit app for real-time tracking and trip planning. Additional services include NiteRide, a free late-night ride service for students, and the 380 Express, a commuter route between Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. These options support accessible, eco-friendly transportation for students, staff, and the community.
