IOWA CITY, IA (JUNE 19, 2024) — The University of Iowa is excited to announce its 4th Annual BioBlitz event, bringing local scientists and conservationists together with community members for a unique opportunity to explore and document the rich biodiversity of Iowa. The event will take place on Saturday, July 13 at the Ashton Prairie Living Laboratory (APLL).  Participants of all ages are encouraged to join in this engaging and educational experience.

A bioblitz is an event that focuses on finding and identifying as many species as possible in a specific area over a short period of time.  During the APLL BioBlitz, participants will have the chance to work alongside expert scientists from various disciplines, enhancing their understanding of ecological systems and species identification techniques. Guided by these knowledgeable professionals, attendees will explore different habitats to uncover the hidden biodiversity at APLL.

The event will feature a range of engaging activities suitable for individuals and families alike. Attendees can take part in species identification using the iNaturalist app and hands-on demonstrations of scientific techniques used to study biodiversity.  The findings will create a comprehensive snapshot of the natural environment in and around the prairie and contribute valuable data to ongoing research and conservation efforts.  In addition, there will be interactive exhibits, and educational displays.

The University of Iowa BioBlitz is not only a chance to appreciate the natural wonders of Iowa but also an important contribution to environmental research and conservation.  Join us on Saturday, July 13 at Ashton Prairie Living Laboratory for a day of exploration, education, and celebration of Iowa's biodiversity. The event is free and open to the public, and no prior experience or expertise is necessary. Together, let's unveil the hidden treasures of our natural world and make a positive impact on the conservation of our environment.

Event partners include the University of Iowa's Department of Athletics, Office of Sustainability and the Environment, Department of Biology, Department of Chemistry, Hubbell Environmental Law Initiative, Macbride Nature Recreation Area, Landscape Services, Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, The Pentacrest Museums, Department of Geographical and Sustainability Sciences, State Hygienic Laboratory, Engie North America, and Bee Campus Committee.
