IOWA CITY, IA (July 1, 2025) — The University of Iowa invites the public to participate in its 5th Annual BioBlitz, a free, family-friendly event celebrating the biodiversity of Iowa’s prairie ecosystems. Taking place on Saturday, July 12 at the Ashton Prairie Living Laboratory (APLL), the BioBlitz brings together scientists, students, and community members to explore, document, and celebrate local wildlife.

A BioBlitz is a collaborative effort to identify as many species as possible within a specific area in a limited timeframe. Participants of all ages will have the chance to catch, photograph, and identify plants, insects, birds, and other wildlife—guided by expert scientists and conservationists from across the University of Iowa.

Throughout the day, attendees will:

  • Explore a variety of prairie habitats
  • Learn to use the iNaturalist app for species identification
  • Participate in hands-on scientific demonstrations
  • Visit interactive exhibits and educational displays

Findings from the event will contribute to ongoing research and conservation initiatives, helping build a broader understanding of the region’s ecological health.

“The BioBlitz is not only a celebration of Iowa’s natural heritage but also a meaningful contribution to science,” said event organizer Beth MacKenzie. “It’s an opportunity for the public to get directly involved in field research and discover the vibrant ecosystems that thrive right here in our community.”

No prior experience is necessary, and all materials will be provided. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is requested.
