Greek life at Iowa is working toward becoming more energy efficient and sustainable by partnering with Green Iowa AmeriCorps.

Green Iowa AmeriCorps is a statewide organization based out of the University of Northern Iowa. A team of AmeriCorps service members in Iowa City have offered free home energy audits to residents for the past several years.

Now, the group is helping a University of Iowa sorority reduce its energy use and increase sustainability, and hopes to connect with more greek life chapters to increase environmental awareness among a large population of college students.

Alpha Delta Pi - Alpha Beta chapter recently had an energy audit conducted on their house on Bloomington Street to find inefficiencies in their home that were leading to overuse of energy. AmeriCorps service members replaced lightbulbs with LED lights, checked the house’s aerators, and filled in a gap in a door that was letting outside air in the house.

Green Iowa AmeriCorps also plans to do education events with the Alpha Delta Pi sorority, providing information about how women can live a more sustainable life, such as using reusable menstrual products instead of disposable pads and tampons.

“We’re going beyond energy, we’re here to make your house more energy efficient, but we also want to focus on waste and recycling,” said Evie Feijo, Iowa City Green Iowa AmeriCorps education coordinator.
